Tech-Powered Convenience: Bringing Restaurant Ordering and Delivery into the Walmart Shopping Experience
June 4, 2026 | 2 min read
At Walmart, we're constantly looking for ways to make everyday life easier for our customers. Sometimes that means helping customers stock up on groceries for the week. Other times, it means getting dinner on the table fast. Until now, those needs often required separate apps, separate orders, and separate deliveries.
Beginning this month, customers in eligible areas can order from Subway directly through the Walmart app or Walmart.com, either as a standalone order or alongside a Walmart Express Delivery order. This allows customers to combine groceries, general merchandise, and freshly prepared meals into a single unified checkout and delivery experience, creating a more convenient way to shop for everyday needs.
Imagine realizing you're out of milk and need a few items for tomorrow's breakfast, while also wanting dinner delivered tonight. Instead of juggling multiple apps and deliveries, customers can now browse the Subway menu, customize their meals, add groceries and household essentials to their cart, and check out all in one frictionless flow. Throughout the journey, customers receive real-time order tracking and visibility, making it easy to know when their order will arrive.
Creating this experience required us to build a new restaurant eCommerce platform. We developed capabilities that enable menu management, item customization, ordering, fulfillment, and delivery, all within the Walmart experience. This allows customers to discover restaurant offerings alongside the products they already shop for every day.
As an increasingly AI-native company, we're leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning throughout the platform to power a smoother experience. From supporting dynamic menu configurations and item customizations to predicting preparation times, order readiness, and delivery promises, our models drive smarter, real-time decisions that improve reliability for customers, restaurants, and drivers.
While the customer experience is seamless, a great deal of coordination happens behind the scenes. Our platform intelligently synchronizes restaurant preparation, driver arrival, and delivery timing using real-time operational signals. For customers placing combined orders, advanced routing and fulfillment logic orchestrates grocery and restaurant workflows to help ensure frozen items stay cold, prepared meals stay fresh, and everything arrives together as expected.
We also enhanced the experience for drivers on the Spark Driver platform with restaurant-specific pickup and delivery workflows, including item validation, pickup instructions, and proof-of-delivery capabilities. These features help create a reliable experience for customers, restaurants, and drivers alike.
By leveraging Walmart's enterprise platform, AI-powered decisioning, and shared capabilities, we're creating new ways to connect digital and physical experiences around our customers' everyday needs. From weekly stock-ups to immediate cravings, we are transforming everyday logistics into one continuous, AI-powered customer experience.
