Why I Joined Walmart Global Tech

Why I Joined Walmart Global Tech

Let's be up front, we as technologists and leaders are often motivated by opportunity. Opportunities to transform, opportunities to change the world for the better, and opportunities to work with some of the best colleagues in the world. Rather than throw more facts at you, I want to give a glimpse of the depth of opportunity that initially attracted me to Walmart Global Tech( #walmartinfoseclife).

Transformation: It is not every day that you can join and contribute to the transformation of the largest company in the world. Walmart is at an inflection point in our journey to accelerate our retail flywheel to rapidly leverage our unique competitive advantages to win and win big. We want to win eCommerce, Health and Wellness, Financial Services, Supply Chain, and continue to win Retail. Securing each of these pillars alone would prove fascinating but building a more secure future for five is a transformational leader’s dream come true.

Trust sentiment as a differentiator: The commoditization of rapid goods delivery- remember, 90% of Americans live within 10 minutes of a Walmart - and the ubiquitous availability of products via e-commerce means that customers will be reshaping their spending decisions. I believe that trust will be a key component of that decision and I joined Walmart Global Tech to double down on our investment in earning that trust in everything that we do.  At Walmart Global Tech, security isn’t and will not be an afterthought. We have an ambitious goal of being the most trusted retailer in the world and our InfoSec teams are key drivers of this vision. Who wouldn’t want to be pioneers of leveraging InfoSec as a competitive advantage to be the most trusted retailer in the world?

People and culture are king: Those of you that know me well, know of my deep passion for serving and investing in people. People are what have always made Walmart special and people will be how we win. Our leaders - starting with my leader Jerry Geisler- share this passion and are making investment in maintaining our considerable strengths, expanding our teams in key growth areas, and taking new territory. Want some examples of Walmart’s focus on people and culture? Learn more about our Live Better U program, our commitment to veterans and their families, our efforts towards CDE&I initiatives. Who wouldn’t want to work at an InfoSec organization where our people are paramount?

To conclude this thought, I offer a challenge. As you and your loved ones navigate the global pandemic, we all gear up for the broad technology transformations ahead, and the nature of work changes, there is no better time than now to consider a career in Information Security. Keep an eye out for #walmartinfoseclife for more amazing content this year. Talk again soon!

I can attest that Rob invests in and takes care of his people. Cyber professionals who want to “do good” should give the opportunities at Walmart serious consideration.
