Walmart Control Services (WCS) powers Next Generation Fulfillment Centers

By Srini Venkatesan, Executive Vice President, U.S. Omni Tech, Walmart Global Tech

Walmart customers expect to find what they want, where they want it, when they want it, at the lowest possible price. Meeting these expectations, flawlessly, every time, is the key to Walmart’s success. Supply chain operations enables the “where and when” aspect of this customer expectation.

As we increase the use of automation to move goods through our fulfillment networks and in conjunction with our customers’ rising expectations of same-day fulfillment Walmart Global Tech created a Warehouse Control System, Walmart Control Services (WCS). An automation and integration control system which allows us to quickly deploy new automation techniques and seamlessly adapt new automation opportunities. You can picture WCS as the “brain” coordinating and trafficking the flow of the inventory and enabling us to integrate with varying automation systems like Knapp, Symbotic and Witron into our vast supply chain network to execute the handling of the actual operation.

Parvez Musani, Vice President, Transportation Technology, Walmart Global Tech said, “Creating our own warehouse automation control, optimization and orchestration platform allows for easy interaction and optimal control of automation to increase the operational efficiency within a warehouse in a vendor-agnostic manner. We built Walmart Control Services using our modern tech stack and it supports seamless ways to integrate with disparate systems and execute advanced optimizations.”

Walmart Control Services (WCS) was created in house by Walmart Global Tech and focuses on three core principles: simplicity, stability and scalability.

We can simplify how we integrate our systems with third party vendors without the need to recode for every instance, enhance stability through built-in monitors for integrations, which reduces the number of integrations that must be built and maintained and allows us to scale efficiently by piloting different variations within the system before deploying to market.

As David Guggina, Senior Vice President of Innovation & Automation, Walmart U.S. wrote today, “We’re on an exciting journey to completely transform the way our supply chain operates, and it’s amazingly rewarding to see our associates and customers reap the benefits. We’re proud of our commitment to earn the trust of our customers and Walmart+ members, and we’ll never stop innovating to keep it.” You can read more about our next generation fulfillment centers in his blog post here

Excited to see the shared belief in agnostic integration being critical to flexibility. That’s why I am also so excited about what SVT Robotics has done for the entire supply chain industry.
