Geospatial technology has brought in a new wave of transformation across industries. By integrating spatial data, 3D mapping and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geospatial technology is enabling businesses to take more informed and accurate decisions.

At Walmart, we have embraced geospatial intelligence, most recently using it to expand our delivery network to 12M households.

Our Innovative Solution

Walmart’s geospatial technology is a game-changing technology we’ve customized to optimize our operations. Built on open-source software that organizes geographies into a hexagonal grid, the technology combines cutting-edge geospatial intelligence with internal and external data. This integration generates powerful insights at a granular level.

With this technology, we’ve created a new approach that is a step ahead of the decade-old method of grouping customers based on broad zones like zip codes or catchment areas. These inconsistent geographic markers don’t reflect finer details about customer behavior.

We leveraged this technology to create catchment areas that are customized to each store. It is empowering us to be truly tech-powered and deliver to more customers. The integration of such intelligent tech enables us to adapt to the context of each customer's needs, especially during the busiest season of the year.

As geospatial technology evolves, we’re well-positioned to leverage this transformative technology, making retail more adaptive, customer-focused and intuitive—pixel by pixel.
